pre-school &
reception
Children are at the heart of all that we do! We spend an enormous amount of time making sure children feel safe, loved and secure in their school environment so that learning can take place effortlessly. This is achieved through home visits prior to your child starting in Pre-School or Reception, information shared from your child’s previous setting, as well as information shared from home. We firmly believe that families are our co-educators and encourage as much home/school collaboration as possible. Learning Together at School sessions, workshops and observations via Class Dojo are all examples of how we bridge the gap between school and home.
Once children are happily settled in school, we use a mixture of whole-class teaching, small group work and child-initiated learning to teach or embed skills. Discrete Phonics, Literacy and Maths lessons ensure the children are steadily progressing with their learning whilst deepening their understanding of prior knowledge.
The children take part in a daily meditation following lunch which helps us teach the art of mindfulness and how to be still with our thoughts. We also have a weekly yoga class taught by our yoga instructor that works across all three Avanti schools in Bishop’s Stortford.
Over the course of the entire year, you will find children busy learning and exploring in both the indoor and outdoor areas of our classroom as we believe that there is no such thing as bad weather! In fact, building a connection to our planet is one of the many ways we develop spiritual insight. The children keep welly boots as well as puddle suits in school so they are free to experience the seasons and changing weather (as long as it is safe to do so).
We have a carefully planned curriculum that flows seamlessly across our Pre-School and Reception. You can find our curriculum overview in the links below.
If you have a child that is 3-4 years old and you are curious to see what our lovely new setup looks like, come have a look for yourself! We would be happy to schedule a tour and show you around.
What will my child learn?
Each half-term, learning is based on a topic. Please see our curriculum on a page links below to see more on each topic, as well as the EYFS Curriculum Overview.
If you need further information about the curriculum, please speak to your child’s class teacher. We have hosted a Phonics Workshop as well as a Maths Workshop this academic year so do keep a lookout for upcoming events that might be of interest to you.
