Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is an allocation of additional funding provided to schools to support particular groups of children who are vulnerable to underachievement. These children are classified as disadvantaged, meaning that due to family financial circumstances they are eligible to take up free school meal provision, or they are children looked after by the authority. The funding received by Krishna Avanti Primary School has been used in a variety of ways in order to improve attainment and help overcome barriers to learning.

  1. The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

  2. In most cases, the Pupil Premium is allocated to schools and is clearly identifiable. It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium Grant is used.

  3. For pupils from low-income families in non-mainstream settings (special schools, behaviour units for example).

  4. Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, they will be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families.

This will ensure that parents and others are made fully aware of the attainment of pupils covered by the Premium.

PE & Sports Premium Funding at Avanti Brook

At Avanti Brook Physical Education and Sporting play is very important for all pupils and at least two-hour sessions per week are dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. We believe that physical activity and sport contribute to the holistic development of children and through participation in sport and physical education, children learn more about themselves and develop lifelong values such as: teamwork, fair play and respect for themselves and others. There is significant evidence to show the positive effects of sport and exercise on children’s physical health, growth, and development but also on their academic ability. Sport and activity also provide a healthy environment for children to learn how to deal with competition and how to cope with both winning and with losing.

Competition

Competition is an important part of school life. Children are introduced to competition within different areas of the curriculum and also through day to day experiences at the school. All children will have the opportunity to compete in-school competitions throughout the year.

Our sporting teams will also be scheduled to play other schools in various matches throughout the year and enter various borough competitions.

Our aims for the Sports Premium Funding

Avanti Brook’s Sports Premium Spending Action Plan is available by clicking here:

Key Indicators:

  • Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity

  • Profile of PE is raised across the school as a tool for school improvement

  • Increased confidence knowledge and skills of all staff in the teaching of PE and sport

  • Broader experiences of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

  • Increased participation in competitive sport

Understanding Ofsted

What purpose do inspections serve?

To provide external validation of the school’s judgements, to be a critical eye on the school’s work and to challenge and support leadership teams in identifying with greater insight the needs and priorities of the school.

Do these results influence other matters?

Results influence the School Development Plans which guide the work of the school, influence who we might recruit (e.g. if Maths is an issue we might look for a maths specialist – also how we spend money depends on needs of school etc).

How does it tie in with Ofsted?

We use Ofsted gradings and expectations to guide judgements made – also the Ofsted Inspection framework which sets out criteria.

If the school is deemed bad in some way, what are the implications?

Many possibilities – but more intervention from inspectors, Local Authorities, changes in school leadership should this be necessary.

Ethos & Values

Our purpose is simple, yet profound: To inspire spiritually compassionate changemakers.

The Avanti Way is the route map for the Avanti family of schools It sets out our purpose and vision, to make clear our highest expectations and commitment to inspiring spiritually compassionate changemakers. Our beliefs are the foundations of our curriculum, pedagogy and ways of working and where our virtues of self-discipline, respect, empathy, integrity, courage and gratitude are lived out, experienced and developed. The metaphor of a Tree of Life presents the roots of spiritual insight, which strengthen the trunk of character formation, which in turn supports the crown of educational excellence and in giving back to our communities.
