Children learning

The impact of our curriculum is reflected in pupils who know more, remember more and can do more over time. Pupils demonstrate secure subject knowledge, apply their skills across different contexts and communicate their understanding effectively.

In addition to academic outcomes, pupils at Avanti Brook develop into thoughtful, reflective and responsible individuals. They show respect for others, demonstrate empathy and are increasingly able to consider ethical questions and their role in society. Pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values needed to thrive.

Subjects at Avanti Brook Primary School

Art

The intent of the art curriculum at Avanti Brook is to provide pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils develop their understanding of artistic techniques, materials and processes, while also learning about a diverse range of artists and cultural traditions.

Implementation ensures that pupils build skills progressively, revisit key concepts and are given opportunities to reflect on their work. As a result, pupils become confident in expressing their ideas creatively and develop an appreciation of art as a form of personal and cultural expression.

Computing

The computing curriculum is designed to equip pupils with the knowledge and skills required to participate safely and effectively in a digital world. Pupils learn about computer systems, programming and digital literacy through a structured sequence of lessons that build on prior knowledge.

Online safety is embedded throughout, ensuring pupils understand how to use technology responsibly. Design and Technology (DT)

In Design and Technology, the intent is to develop pupils’ creativity, technical knowledge and practical skills through designing and making purposeful products. The curriculum is structured to ensure progression in designing, making and evaluating, as well as in understanding materials and tools. Pupils are encouraged to think critically and solve problems, applying their learning in meaningful contexts. As a result, pupils develop resilience, independence and the ability to evaluate and improve their work, preparing them for real-life applications.

English – Reading

Reading is a central priority within the curriculum, with the intent of ensuring that all pupils become fluent, confident readers who develop a love of reading. A structured approach to the teaching of reading enables pupils to build decoding, fluency and comprehension skills over time. High-quality texts are carefully selected to broaden pupils’ knowledge and expose them to rich vocabulary. The impact is evident in pupils’ ability to read with confidence, understand a range of texts and engage thoughtfully with what they read.

English – Writing

Through a well-sequenced curriculum, pupils develop their understanding of grammar, punctuation and spelling alongside their ability to structure and refine their writing. Teachers provide clear models and opportunities for practice, ensuring pupils can apply their skills independently. As a result, pupils produce writing of increasing quality and complexity, demonstrating control, creativity and purpose.

Languages

The languages curriculum aims to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world by introducing them to a new language and culture. Lessons are structured to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills progressively. Pupils revisit and build on prior learning, enabling them to retain and apply their knowledge. The impact is seen in pupils’ growing confidence in communication and their appreciation of cultural diversity.

The curriculum is sequenced to build knowledge of places, environments and geographical processes over time. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about issues such as sustainability and global interdependence. History

The history curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ knowledge of the past and their understanding of how it shapes the present. Pupils learn about a range of historical periods and develop skills in enquiry, interpretation and critical thinking. The curriculum is structured to ensure progression in both knowledge and disciplinary skills. As a result, pupils are able to make connections, evaluate evidence and develop a coherent understanding of history.

Teachers use clear modelling and practice to secure learning, and pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning. The impact is evident in pupils’ confidence, accuracy and ability to apply mathematical skills in a range of contexts.

Our Approach to Learning

At Avanti Brook, classrooms are calm, purposeful and inclusive environments where high expectations are consistently maintained. Teachers foster positive relationships and create a culture where pupils feel safe to engage, take risks and reflect on their learning. Opportunities for reflection and mindfulness support pupils’ spiritual development, while collaborative learning encourages discussion and deeper understanding.

Our Curriculum Journey

The curriculum is mapped out across all year groups to ensure clear progression and continuity. Regular review and evaluation by subject leaders ensure that the curriculum remains effective, ambitious and responsive to pupils’ needs. Through this approach, pupils are supported to achieve well and to develop into spiritually compassionate changemakers, fully prepared for the next stage of their education.

Educational Excellence

Our vision for educational excellence is one where deeply inspired teachers nurture joyful pupils and nourish their innate passion for learning. Learning is a quest to discover each pupil’s unique gifts and potential and lay the foundation for their lifelong journey of learning. This is inseparable from high academic standards, where a challenging holistic curriculum cultivates independently thoughtful and reflective pupils by working towards a sense of mastery, emphasising depth, and not just breadth.

Character Formation

Our vision for character formation is one where virtues are taught by example and a supportive community of learners fosters a powerful sense of individual and collective purpose. Learning develops for these conscious changemakers as a quest for making the world a better place, starting with oneself. The capacity to internalise and put into practice what we have learned is the true test of learning. Building this capacity demands an experiential, virtues-led curriculum that embraces collaboration, custodianship and global perspectives.

Spiritual Insight

Our vision for spiritual insight is one where our interconnectedness with all living beings and with the universe, urges acts born out of humility and love, and the Self is perceived beyond its layers of coverings. Learning blossoms for these seekers as a quest for self-discovery and opens the door to their unlimited potential; an antidote to the emptiness of a materialistic or mechanistic worldview. The curriculum unveils the possibilities of sacredness and transcendence at every moment and so engenders a deeply positive attitude to life, enduring happiness, and heartfelt relationships.
